Granny Gaduate

The Psychology Graduate with an Art Minor

I am so extremely proud of my mom.  She has been working toward her degree for years.  I can remember in my middle school years that she was taking classes at Mt. Hood Community College to get her Associates Degree.  Then there were many years that she sacrificed her goals to get her education as her five children attended BYU, went on missions, and got married.  Finally it has been her turn.  She has been tireously working for the past few years to finish.  She walked across the stage and got her degree.  I could not hold back the tears that day or for several days leading up to it as I explained to my many friends why we would be traveling to Reno for a quick trip.  I wouldn't have missed this day for anything!
My sister in law Rachel and I (with the help of Anthony's mad computer skills) made t-shirts for all the grand kids that were in attendance.  They said Nevada and had the wolf logo and then said "Granny's Fan Club".  My mom's said "Granny Graduate"!  They were so fun to make and surprise her with.  She just grinned from ear to ear and hugged us when she saw them.  All the kids wore them to the graduation!  She may have been one of the oldest grads there that day, but she of all the graduates I think was the most appreciative of this degree and the education she has gained.
Its been interesting to talk to my parents in the past few months as my mom has crammed for exams, pulled all nighters to meet deadlines, and studied, and studied.  They have started living the college schedule.  I was laughing so hard the first night we got there.  We all put our kids to bed and then said, "Well I think we better go to bed, we are exhausted"!  Then my mom said, alright, I've got some last minute things I've got to do for school and stayed up until after midnight!  Talk about role reversal.  My Dad has been a great support to my mom this past semester as she had to take on a very heavy load to graduate this semester.  He has had to cook, clean, and keep up on the house because she has been too busy.
We threw her a big party after the graduation ceremony with yummy food and graduation cup cakes.  We've been planning via phone for a month. (Kandra, Rachel, and I)  Way to Go Granny Grad!!  I am so thankful to my parents who have set the example to my kids that you never give up and its never too late to gain knowledge and education.
