Barth Germany

IMG_9955
We headed up to the Northern German border a day earlier than our cruise left so that we could swing by Barth Germany.  Barth Germany is a special place to our family, one we have heard stories about for years.  This is where Jared’s Grandpa (Grandpa Anderson) was held as a Prisoner of War for 9 months during WWII.  His plane was shot down (he was a side gunner) and they had to parachute out.  Although he was treated fairly decently during this time, his family was left in the dark and had no idea where he was.  Out of respect for Grandpa, we’ve always wanted to visit this spot since moving to Germany.  It was a special moment to be sitting there with our kids and reading from the book that Jared’s mom put together with pictures and journal entries from Grandpa at that time.  Although the generation we are raising is pretty far removed from these events, we are determined that our children gain a respect for those who served and fought for their freedom.  We are so grateful grandpa Anderson for your service to your Country, and Family.  Thank you for setting the example for those to follow you.  We took these pictures and sent them to Grandpa shortly after getting home from our trip.  We included letters that each of the kids had written during Family Night, thanking him specifically for his service.  Although there isn’t a lot still left here, we hold Barth Germany as a special place in our family history.
