Well I’ll let you guess who was most excited out of our family to go on our 5 hour Sound of Music Tour! It is someone’s favorite movie at our house…..me! I love Sound of Music. It has a little bit of history, cute little kids, a love story, great music, and awesome scenery. I LOVE the music and everything about it. When we were deciding whether or not to move to Germany, this play/ movie played a big role in it. After our good friends the Johnsons had moved here and were enjoying it we started thinking we should do it. Then after we got our kids settled in school and back into our Fall time routine, we started feeling like it wasn’t a good idea and that we were perfectly happy in Las Vegas. Then the Summerlin Theatre group put on Sound of Music. Seeing as it is one of my favorite things, we went as couples to see it. Jared and I liked it so well that he said I should bring Hanna back to it. When I brought Hanna back to it and watched it for the second time, I really kept feeling like we should take this experience and opportunity. The feeling wouldn’t go away and I finally convinced Jared we should pray to find out and think about going again. The Rest is history…… Thank you SOM for bringing me not only a great movie and soundtrack, but a wonderful opportunity to travel to amazing places.
Leopoldskron Castle – The back side of the castle was used as the Trapp family home, the children were boating on the Leopoldskron Lake and fell into the water. The Venetian room was copied from the castle and used as the ballroom. A different house was used as the front of the house close to Hellbruun Castle.
Hellbrunn Castle with reconstructed glass pavillion- This hunting castle was built in the early 17th century by Prince-Archbishop Markus Sittikus. In the gardens the glass “sixteen going on seventeen” pavillion was reconstructed for the pleasure of those fans still returning after 30 years.
The tree lane where the children swung from wearing their newly sewn curtain “play clothes”
Heading out to the “Lake Region” just outside of Salzburg
Again, some of us were more excited than others of us for this tour!
Wedding Church Mondsee - In Mondsee Cathedral the film wedding between Julie Andrews as Maria and Christopher Plummer as the Baron took place.
The restaurant across the street from the Mondsee Cathedral where they serve amazing “crisp apple struedal”:
Mirabell Gardens - The Mirabell Gardens were laid out in the 18th century. Maria and the children were seen dancing around the statue of Pegasus, the winged horse, and throughout the gardens singing 'Do-Re-Mi'.
Although I learned some “truths” about the Sound of Music like: that Eidelweiss is not a cherished Austiran folk tune or national anthem, Maria in real life was called to be a governess to only one of the 7 children also named Maria, the names and genders of the children were changed, the family didn’t escape to Switzerland by hiking, but actually pretended to go on a hike and caughta a train to Italy!, many scenes were actually filmed in Fox studios in Hollywood on reproductions of the original spots in Salzburg such as: Nonnberg Abbey Courtyard scenes, the graveyard scenes, and the ballroom dance scenes.
I wasn’t disappointed however because I sill LOVE this movie and always will!!
