Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument in Wiltshire, England, about 2 miles (3.2 km) west of Amesbury and 8 miles (13 km) north of Salisbury. One of the most famous sites in the world, Stonehenge is the remains of a ring of standing stones set within earthworks. It is in the middle of the most dense complex of Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments in England, including several hundred burial mounds. Archaeologists believe it was built anywhere from 3000 BC to 2000 BC. Radiocarbon dating in 2008 suggested that the first stones were raised between 2400 and 2200 BC, whilst another theory suggests that bluestones may have been raised at the site as early as 3000 BC. Old English words stān meaning "stone", and either hencog meaning "hinge" (because the stone lintels hinge on the upright stones) or hen(c)en meaning "hang" or "gallows" or "instrument of torture".
We quite enjoyed our visit to Stonehenge and listening to the audio guides provided with our entrance fee. Its so cool to hear about the theories they have of calendars systems, rotations of the earth and sun hitting the rocks, rocks dropped by the devil, and religious ceremonies to explain why these not so random rocks appear in this circle here in this field.
Close to Stonehenge is the super cool English manor: High Clere Castle. More known in recent years through BBC as the Famed Downton Abbey. I was almost as excited to see it as Stonehenge!!! I’m a big fan of the show and love that Jared will actually watch it with me. This was a really neat tour. Although we weren’t allowed any photographing inside, I sure wanted to take pictures. The show is actually filmed here and has not been changed at all for the show! I felt like I was standing on the set except it was the real deal.
Some of us were more excited to be here than others…..
These beautiful servants were lined up to greet Jared and me cuz we are VIPs …….
We enjoyed some scones with clotted cream and yummy jam because well our English roots were calling to us, until the bees tried to carry us off!
After our Downton Abbey visit we made our way to see nother circular rock formation which is less famous, but supposedly just as cool. We are here to tell you that no it was not as cool!! The rocks were more spread apart and haphazard.
One more neat village church and cemetery.
