Metz France

Jared and I snuck away during the busy holidays for a quick overnighter to Metz France. Its only an hour and a half drive from our house, but definitely different than Germany! Metz is in the Lorraine area of France which we heard was known for its quiche. (Quiche Lorraine) With the Christmas market and Quiche Lorraine on the to do list we headed there after getting the kids and the sitter settled.

We walked straight to the downtown area after checking in to find some dinner. Not knowing where to try, we ducked into one of the first restaurants we found next to the Christmas Market. We had asked the desk concierge at our hotel, but in true French Fashion he was not helpful and kind of snobby. Visions of old Gilmore Girls episodes popped in my head as I recalled snobby French MiChele on that show who was the concierge at the Bed and Breakfast! We had a good laugh over this.

The restaurant we found was dimly lit and super quaint with old wallpaper and antique decorations. The kind of place with different chairs at every table. It was bustling with people and seemed to be the only place busy on this late Friday night in Metz. So we ordered our dinner which came with Quiche Lorraine. Unlike Germany, almost nobody in France speaks any English so we were not sure what we had ordered. We just made sure it had the Quiche. Oh my. We were not disappointed. The yummiest eggs and French cheeses all over a flaky crust ever….we were in HEAVEN!! It was about 5 inches high when it arrived. It was a very healthy portion. The rest of the meal was good but kind of forgettable after the Quiche Lorraine. Yum. The trip was totally already worth it!

The rest of the trip was just icing on the cake: A fun Christmas Market, neat Cathedral, Incredible Eclairs for Breakfast, etc. What a great overnighter!

The Market was similar to German ones, but a little different too…. I loved how this chocolate was stacked like this:

If you ever wanted to swim in a vat full of au graten potatoes, I know just the place for you!
